Big Cats Set to Celebrate Two Huge Milestones in 2025

The Springvale Lions Baseball Club are preparing to host two milestone celebrations, marking the club’s 50th anniversary and 30 years since the establishment of the Big Cats women’s program. These two commemorative events are set to not only honour the club’s rich history but also highlight the club’s commitment to inclusivity over a long period of time.

Celebrating 50 Years of Club History

The 50th-anniversary function will be a nostalgic affair, where past and present players, coaches, and supporters gather at the home of Big Cats baseball, KH Wearne Reserve to reflect on the club’s long-standing legacy. From its humble beginnings in 1974, the Springvale Lions have grown into a key pillar of local baseball in the South-Eastern suburb of Springvale. The event will be a time to celebrate Premiership victories, memorable moments, and the countless friendships formed over the decades.

One of the key themes of the event will be reflecting on the club’s history—not only to honor past successes but also to inspire future generations. At a time where everyone is busy and has a lot going on, it will be a time to pause and remember great times on and off the field, a reminder of how baseball at Springy has been much more than just a game. It’s been a place where lives have been shaped, lifelong bonds have been created, and a strong sense of belonging has been cultivated – still is.

Honoring 30 Years of Women’s Baseball

Equally significant will be the celebration of the 30th anniversary of the Springvale Lions’ women’s program. Since its inception in 1994, the women’s team, or the ‘Big Cats’, have become a beacon of empowerment in grassroots sport, providing opportunities for women of all ages and abilities to play the great game of baseball. The program has produced state and national representatives, but more importantly, it has become a family. A place where girls and women feel supported and empowered to become the best versions of themselves – both on and off the diamond. The club’s 30-year commitment to the program and its long-term success has no doubt contributed to the growth of women’s baseball as a sport more holistically also, which the club is very proud of.

This event will be more than just a nod to the past—it will be a celebration of how far the women’s program has come in breaking down barriers and fostering inclusivity. From tough and challenging beginnings where wins were scarce, to 21 Division One Grand Final appearances straight, stories will be shared of the pioneering women who paved the way for the future. Aside from their on-field successes, the introduction of the women’s program has had a significant impact on the club overall, their contribution on the committee, as coaches, canteen staff and general club supporters a testament to the great people involved.

2024/25 is also the 20th anniversary since the Big Cat women won their first Division One Premiership. Another reason to celebrate.

A Club That Brings People Together

Both anniversaries will highlight the Big Cats’ broader role in the community. Over the years, the club has become a gathering place where people from diverse backgrounds come together with a shared love of baseball. Participating in many different divisions across both the men’s and women’s programs, the club has always welcomed all, and found a place where everyone can belong.

For the Big Cats, the future looks bright as we continue to build on a legacy of excellence, inclusivity, and camaraderie. As one club member put it, “This isn’t just about the games we’ve won. It’s about the memories, the friendships, and the way this club brings people together.”
