The Springvale Lions Baseball Club is gearing up for the fifth annual “Beyond Blue for Barky” day, a special event dedicated to celebrating the life of their beloved friend and teammate, Jacinda Barclay. This tradition began in March 2021, just months after Jacinda’s tragic passing, and has since become a significant day for the club and the community. The event not only honours Barky’s memory, but also raises important awareness and funds for Beyond Blue.
Over the past four years, the club has raised a huge total of $18,230.55, with every dollar contributed directly to Beyond Blue. Each year, the Big Cats bring their community together to remember “Barky” in a way that reflects her love for life, sport, and her teammates. This year’s event promises to be bigger and more vibrant than ever, offering a mix of reflection, fun, and fundraising that’s become the hallmark of the day.
One of the highlights of the day is the club’s famous cake stall, which will be back again this year. Club members and supporters have come to know and love the array of delicious homemade cakes and slices, with every sale adding to the funds raised for Beyond Blue.
As we do each year, all players on the field will wear the number 17, the number Jacinda proudly wore as a player. It’s a tradition that began with the first event back in 2021 and continues to be a powerful symbol of her legacy within the club.
This year, the club has added a unique twist, calling it “Beats, Baseball, and Beers” to bring a bit of Barky’s energetic flare to the day. After the women’s division one game, attendees are invited to stick around for some music, take part in batting practice on the field, and enjoy a few cold refreshments. It’s a perfect way to wind down the day, sharing laughs and memories while raising a glass or two in Jacinda’s honour.
As the fifth Beyond Blue for Barky day approaches, the Springvale Lions Baseball Club is once again proving that Jacinda’s memory lives on through the community she loved so much. With every cake sold, every song played, and every ball hit, the club continues to make a difference, supporting Beyond Blue and ensuring that mental health awareness stays at the forefront of their efforts.
